Meditation Techniques That Help Counter Stress

Yogesh Zito is a Portland, Oregon professional who serves the advanced electrical contracting needs of clients in the commercial and residential spheres. A regular yoga practitioner, Yogesh Zito also maintains a longstanding interest in meditation.

Providing a way of cultivating awareness of the present moment, mindfulness meditation is one of the fundamental pathways that many people use to deal with stress. A key exercise involves focusing fully on breathing for an extended period and allowing thoughts of yesterday and tomorrow to recede.

The “one minute breath” is one form of deep, controlled breathing that calms the mind and brings the present to the forefront. It can also be extended into pranayama, a yoga meditation practice centered on breath.

Another meditation approach to reducing stress centers on repeating a mantra, a sound or word that serves to focus concentration on a single aspect of reality. Associated with transcendental meditation, a simple mantra involves speaking the phrase om in a way that vibrates deep in the abdomen and resonates throughout the body. The effect of repeating om in a peaceful setting is often one of increased alertness, positivity, and relaxation.
